Our Roots

A Family Name in
North Texas Sod

Prime Sod has deep roots in the sod industry — not only in Texas, but across the United States. Ike Thomas was one of the founding farmers of Thomas Bros. Grass, which began in 1970 in Texas. He, along with his father and brothers, built a nationally known sod company that started with a simple 10-acre farm.

Thomas Bros. Grass merged with several other sod companies to form Turfgrass America — serving sports fields and front yards across the south with the same commitment to quality. No job was too big or too small for these sod farmers. Today, Thomas Bros. Grass lives on as Prime Sod, continuing that tradition of quality, service, and pride in every lawn we grow.

During Ike's tenure, he served as president of the American Sod Producers Association (ASPA), now known as Turfgrass Producers International (TPI), and sat on the National Turfgrass Evaluation Program (NTEP) Board.

"The name is new. The expectations of excellence in sod and customer service have not changed since 1970." - Ike Thomas

How We Got Here Today

A New Generation.
The Same Commitment.

In 2004, Ike Thomas retired from the sod industry. He and his sons, Ryan and Justin, pursued other ventures — but in 2011, they had the opportunity to buy back one of the original Thomas Bros. Grass farms.

The Thomas Brothers moved forward as a new generation committed to bringing quality, drought-resistant grass to North Central Texas. Prime Sod is the new name for this well-known family business. The name is new — the standards are not.

Headquartered on that same 10-acre Texas farm where it all started, Prime Sod is now the premier certified grower of TifTuf Bermuda — the most drought-resistant Bermuda available in North Central Texas.
